Chapter Sixteen

Francesca’s heart was aching. So much so that she wasn’t sure it would ever feel light again. She couldn’t think of a single thing to say that could ease the sorrow in Adam’s eyes. She couldn’t think of a way to tell him that what he’d gone through and what he still had to shoulder didn’t make him bad or insane or any of those horrid things he thought about himself. To tell him that she didn’t fear him. And would never fear him. That he had a journey of healing to go on and that he hadn’t yet started.

She trusted him implicitly and knew he would never, ever purposefully harm her. And that if he would allow her to, she would take every step of that journey with him. It was too soon, far too soon for her to be thinking that way and feeling what she felt for him. Another thing she didn’t quite know how to describe. But she felt it anyway. Keenly and deeply.

And so, she did the only thing she could think of to even try to communicate the tumultuous emotions raging through her. She kissed him.

Francesca felt Adam’s shoulders stiffen under her touch and for one, awful moment, she thought that he would push her away. But then, with a groan of capitulation, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer until every inch of her was aligned with the heated hardness of his body. It was only when she felt what thin barriers both of their clothing provided that she realized she’d come to him in nothing but a thin cotton night rail, her hair tumbling down her back in a mess of curls.

Francesca was able to feel just how deliciously solid his body was, feel the ridges of his tightly packed muscle, and feel the thunderous racing of his heart, which surely echoed her own.

The kiss had been meant as a comfort, a testament to how much she admired him for fighting every day against such unspeakable horrors, how much she trusted him. But the second Adam took control of it, she was lost. The fire that always seemed to crackle just beneath the surface of her skin when he was around, exploded into a leaping flame that incinerated the world around her so there was only him, only the feel of his tongue and his hands.

He dragged his mouth from her own to bury his face in her neck, breathing her in, nipping at her earlobe until she was trembling from the strength of the desire he awoke in her.

“Adam,” she rasped. A question or a prayer or an answer. She didn’t know which. But it was enough to spur him on. Enough so that his hands moved to her neck, tilting her head just so, and he kissed her again with a passion that nearly melted her into a puddle at his feet.

She didn’t know if talking had unleashed something in him, but it certainly felt like it.
